MetroRapid connects the best of the ATX, including employers, schools, shops, parks, neighborhoods, apartments, medical centers, movie theaters, government buildings, tourist attractions and so much more. In fact, the two routes, which roughly form an X across the heart of Austin, serves approximately 25 percent of Capital Metro’s service area, along some of the most heavily trafficked routes. The MetroRapid works great for us because it comes so frequently — every 12-15 minutes at peak and every 15-20 minutes at other times — which means you can take groups out on the town and not worry about bringing a schedule.
Here’s a sample 801 MetroRapid NORTH Transit Adventure:
Texas State Capitol | Open until 10 PM week & 8 PM weekends | Everything’s bigger in Texas, including the Capitol, which is the largest capitol building in the United States. Spend some time exploring the monuments and gardens, then go inside for a guided or self-guided tour of this historic building, artwork and the more recent underground extension. Or, climb up near the top of the dome to see the Six Flags of Texas inlaid in the marble floor or just do some people-watching!
Spider House Patio Bar & Cafe | Open until 2 AM | One of Austin’s legendary hotspots since 1995, the Spider House offers a laid back environment for coffee, cocktails, conversation, and epic people-watching! The Outdoor Patio, romantically blanketed in fairy lights year-round, includes one-of-a-kind antiques and art installation pieces, a novelty collection of garden statues, and an abundance of booths, swings, and table tops. Around the corner, you can also visit the Spider House Ballroom, featuring a wide range of music, theater, comedy and film programming.
Antone’s Record Shop | Open until 10 PM | You’re exploring North Campus, so why not tool around on Guadalupe for a little bit of shopping? There are lots of options, but we like flipping through the old vinyl at Antone’s Record Shop and getting educated on vintage blues, soul and rock & roll legends.
Mondo Gallery | Open until 10 PM | is the fine art gallery brother to Mondo Tees, best known for their highly coveted screen prints of movie posters. The gallery focuses more on actual art pieces. It’s a small space but is well laid out, and has a casual vibe. I love seeing pieces done in a more traditional art style on non-traditional subjects (I went for the Tales from the Crypt show). The gallery has an unassuming white brick front labeled only with their logo, so blink and you miss it.
Black Star Co-op Pub & Brewery | Open until 11 PM week & midnight weekends | Black Star Co-op is the world’s first cooperatively-owned and worker self-managed brewpub, featuring beers made on-site and a rotating collection of Texas-brewed beers on tap. The menu has a lot of good comfort food, vegetarian options and some of the best thick-cut fries and “chips” around! Plus, it’s patio and dining room face the Crestview Station, so you’ll have the opportunity to hop on the Red Line too.
Austin Karaoke | open until 4 AM | After a full day of exploring, you might feel the urge to sing until the wee hours of the morning. Austin Karaoke is one of those unassuming gems that offers private room karaoke for large or small groups and is BYOB, which makes it an inexpensive way to spend the night. Many songs are Korean, but they have an ample selection of 80s and 90s hits that are perfect for karaoke with friends. The music videos that are played have NOTHING to do with the songs and can be random, yet entertaining. Amenities differ from room to room. Some TVs are older, some disco lights work better than others, some rooms will score your song and others won’t. It’s just part of the experience….
