Capital Metro is working to increase the frequency, capacity & safety of MetroRail.
As a result, Capital Metro is closing the Downtown Station on Sunday, June 2, and will open a temporary downtown station by the end of the year. In the meantime, Plaza Saltillo will be the closest stop to downtown, and Capital Metro will be running a Downtown/Saltillo Shuttle to help riders get from East Austin to the Convention Center.
The MetroRail Red Line will not be running on Saturdays until the end of the year. We’ve included some alternative bus routes available if you are trying to get downtown from a rail station:
- Leander: Routes 985 & 987
- Lakeline: Routes 985 & 987
- Howard: Route 980
- Kramer: Routes 3 & 803 (at Domain)
- Crestview: Routes 1, 7 & 801
- Highland: Route 7
- MLK: Route 18
Additionally, for those who work WEST of Congress Avenue, you might catch MetroBus 4 at Comal/East 7th Street.
In other exciting Capital Metro news, a new transit center is coming to South Austin! The Westgate Transit Center opens June 2nd and will serve as a transit hub for South Austin residents, with parking, plus space dedicated for bikes, car-share and other ways for you to connect to your bus.
With MetroRail Service changes, there is no better time to try out some other transportation options like the MetroBus, bicycles, and micro-mobility!
